We went to Denali National Park in spring of 2004. We left Valdez with the intent of camping in the park for a few days and then driving to Fairbanks. We met my mom and aunt in Denali; they rode the train from Anchorage to Denali. The approach to the park was under cover of some ominous storm clouds. Roxann and I camped in the park, while my mom and aunt chose to stay in a Denali lodge. Camping was fine for a few days, until the rain flooded our tent. We decided to forego camping in Fairbanks and checked into a cabin.
We saw quite a few of Denali's resident animals, including caribou, porcupine, sheep and a bear. We took a tourist bus and rode 56 miles into the park. The bus putters along at about 10 or 15 mph. The ride into the park was great, with lots of photo opportunities. The round-trip is an all day affair. I was hoping the bus driver could speed up a little on the drive out of the park. Chugging along at 10 mph when you're cold and hungry is a little tiresome. Still, it was a great trip. Below are photos of caribou, porcupine and a marmot. Somewhere in the middle of the 4th photograph is a bear.
